Football: September 16, 2017

The Mentor Football Cardinals took a road trip and came away with a victory over the Strongsville Mustangs 42-27. The Cards (3-1) gave up the opening TD and then scored the next 4 TD's! The 4 scores came 4 touchdown runs of 2, 6, 1 and 2 yards by Chris Edmond. Later on, Tadas Tatarunas hit Logan Shea for a 13 yard TD. Tatarunas ended the Mentor scoring with his own score 5 yard score. Conor McIntosh was perfect on the night with 6 extra points. The Cards come home next week and take on the Brunswick Blue Devils on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 7:00 pm. GO CARDS!!!

Mentor brought back the Glenville Tarblooders for a JTO visit after nearly a 10 year hiatus. Hard to believe it has been that long as it seems like yesterday we had those many games every year vs. Glenville. The Cards won big 38-15 improving their record to 2-1. Mentor was tied after 1 at 7-7 on a Chris Edmond 1 yard score. The Cards darted to the lead by half up 17-7 with a Tadas Tatarunas to Matt Hartmann 9 yard TD and a Conor McIntosh 39 yard field goal. Mentor kept the scoring in motion with 2 TD's in the 3rd quarter by Derek Kleinhenz (2 yard reception) and Hartmann (7 yard TD) giving the Cards a comfortable 31-7 lead. The teams traded scores in the final quarter leading to the 38-15 final. Mentor travels to Strongsville next on Friday, September 15th. Take the short road trip with us to see the Cards play the Mustangs. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm. GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals hosted the St. Ignatius Wildcats at the JTO on a brisk Friday evening and came up short in a 41-31 loss. The Cards (1-1) and Wildcats played an even first quarter with St. Ignatius leading 3-0. Then the scoring flood gates opened up. Mentor tied the game up at 10 but allowed the Wildcats to score twice before halftime to take a 24-10 lead into the half. Mentor staged a nice comeback in the 3rd quarter to only be down 31-24 going into the final quarter. But, St Ignatius scored twice in less than 5 minutes in the 4th quarter to control the rest of the game. The Cards host another home game next week when the Glenville visits the JTO on Friday, September 8th at 7:00 pm. See you there! GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals kicked off the season with an impressive 49-14 road victory. The start was not so impressive when the Cards went three and out on their opening drive for 0 yards. Massillon took the punt and eventually scored in the first 1:30 of the game. Then the Cardinal hurricane found land. Mentor scored the next 4 TD's taking the lead 28-7 and never looked back. After a Massillon score, the Cards scored the final 3 TD's giving them the 49-14 win. Chris Edmond led all rushers with 18 carries for 131 yards including 2 rushing TD's. QB, Tadas Tatarunas was 16-24 for 185 yards while also adding 67 yards on the ground. Tatarunas had a rushing TD and threw for 2 other scores. Logan Shea and Derek Kleinhenz were on the receiving end of those TD tosses. Nick Saginario and Luke Floriea each had a rushing TD on the evening. The kicking game was perfect with Conor McIntosh and Sophie Kaplan connecting on all extra points. Mentor Defeats Elyria The Mentor Cardinals cruised past the Elyria Pioneers 63-34 in the final regular season game for the season. The Cards end the regular season at 6-4 while awaiting to see if a playoff game is next. The scoring tonight was frequent starting with a Tadas Tatarunas TD toss to Steve Baird for 10 yards. Isaiah Gullick then trotted in the end zone with a 3 yard score followed by another score of 12 yards. Tatarunas then hit Manning Trubisky with a 30 yard TD and then Baird with a 51 yard strike. Just before half, Tatarunas hit Trubisky again but this time for 4 yard TD. 9 total TDs were scored by both teams in the second quarter. The halftime score was 42-34 in favor of the Cards! Mentor scored the final 21 points in the second half with a TD toss by Tatarunas but this time to Derek Kleinhenz for 43 yards. Gullick added 2 additional rushing TDs of 34 and 4 yards to end the scoring. The 6-4 Cardinals now await games tomorrow to see if they receive a playoff invite. Stay tuned and GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals traveled to Brunswick and returned home with a 22-16 victory over the Blue Devils. The Cards (5-4) scored early and never lost the lead. In the first quarter, Tadas Tatarunas hit Manning Trubisky for a 3 yard Touchdown. Isaiah Gullick then scored on a 1 yard burst. The final Cardinal score came with Gullick's 2nd TD tonight on a 13 yard score. Tatarunas finished the game going 18 of 35 for 207 yards while Gullick had 20 carries for 98 yards. Steve Baird led all receivers with 7 catches for 90 yards. The Cards compiled 300 total yards compared to the Blue Devils with 216. Join us next week for the final regular season game of the year when the Cards host Elyria at the JTO. The Friday, October 28th game has a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Mentor Cardinals brought their 3-4 record back to the JTO to take on the Strongsville Mustangs. The Cards won the game 42-26 while compiling over 559 yards on the evening. Scoring for the Cardinals started when Chris Edmond ran a 2 yard score. This was followed by a Ryan Hagan to Manning Trubisky 52 yard strike. Michael Ballentine retuned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD and Tadas Tatarunas hit Isaiah Gullick for a 33 yard scoring strike to go in at halftime up 28-10. Mentor's Tatarunas threw another TD toss but this time to Trubisky for 24 yards. Finally, Tatarunas connected for his 3rd TD on the evening when he hit Trubisky again and this time for a long 71 yard TD reception. The Cards travel to Brunswick next week for the 7:00 pm kickoff on Friday, October 21st. Leave work a little early and join us next week in Brunswick as the Cards try to make the playoffs. GO CARDS!

The Mentor Cardinals needed a win to remain in the playoff hunt hosting the Solon Comets at the JTO. Unfortunately, the Comets came in and controlled the game handing the Cards a 37-8 loss. The Cardinals (2-4) only score came on a Tadas Tatarunas TD toss to Manning Trubisky. Tatarunas was 16 for 34 for 154 yards in the air. Isaiah Gullick had 68 yards on 17 carries tonight while Steve Baird had 9 catches for 95 yards. It's still very rare for an opponent to win at Mentor as we still have an amazing 58-6 home record since 2006. Join us next week as the Cards head to Medina for a 7:00 kickoff on Friday, October 7th.
